1980 - Wildflowers along the Tonto.

1984 - Cheops Temple from
Phantom Creek.

1992 - Crystal Forest Caves.

In 1980 I did a two day hike from the Hermit Trail to the Bright Angel Trail and saw many wildflowers blooming.  I think these are "smooth spreading 4 o'clock" flowers, based on this site.
In 1984 as I left upper Phantom Canyon I had a nice view of Cheops Temple.
In 1992 Neil Jacobs and I spent three nights at Cottonwood Spring below Horseshoe Mesa.  On our first day down we checked out the Crystal Forest Caves below the Redwall (related blog here).

1992 - Cactus in Cottonwood Canyon.

In 1992 Neil Jacobs and I spent three nights at Cottonwood Spring below Horseshoe Mesa.  We hiked out on May 4th.  Our trip was especially memorable to me because of all the blooming cactus we saw.
In 1981 I day hiked down the BA and followed the Tonto to Horn Creek. I was able to follow a route to within 10+ feet of the river west of the main bed before turning back.  [No photos.]

1984 - On the Esplanade.

2008 - Near Tanner with raft.

In 1984 with my Dad, I hiked down the Bill Hall Trail to Thunder River to retrieve some caches I had placed at Deer Creek and Fishtail Rapids.  Our first night we camped on the Esplanade.
In 2008 Chris Forsyth and I hiked down the Tanner Trail to the river and prepared to cross on an inflatable kayak.  Our first attempt was too sketchy and so we crossed the next morning.
In 2002 I did a short hike down the South Kaibab Trail.  [No photos.]

2003 - From camp above Jumpup.

2008 - In the calm channel by Basalt.

In 1984 with my Dad, I hiked down the Bill Hall Trail to Thunder River to retrieve some caches I had placed at Deer Creek and Fishtail Rapids.  On our second day we passed by Thunder Spring on our way to camp down closer to Tapeats Creek.
In 2003 Cara Lynn and I were camped for a couple of nights out on the road to Jumpup Point.  We did some bike riding on this day on the rim road with great views into Kanab Canyon.
In 2008 Chris Forsyth and I hiked down the Tanner Trail to the river.  On our second day, we crossed in an inflatable kayak that packs up at about 50 pounds.  Here is Chris after we crossed into a calm channel of water just above Basalt Rapids.

2002 - Carving at river from 1899.

2003 - Jumpup Cabin.

2004 - At the end of the BA Trail.

2008 - The end of his trail.

In 2002 Cara Lynn and I took a river trip (our first and only, so far).  The first night we were camped at about river mile 23 where I was able to hunt up and find this old tree.  In 1899, Harry McDonald carved his initials on this tree while on Robert Brewster Stanton's amazing journey down the river.
In 2003 Cara Lynn and I were camped for a couple of nights out on the road to Jumpup Point.  This day we hiked down into Jumpup Canyon, past this cabin, with our dogs Peppyr and Scout.
In 2004 John Haney and I did a day hike down the Bright Angel Trail to the river.  He went on to Phantom Ranch and up the So. Kaibab.  I backtracked and went up a route to the Tonto Plateau to the east and picked up the So. Kaibab from there.  I wrote up a blog report on this hike here.
In 2008 Chris Forsyth and I hiked down the Tanner Trail to the river.  On our third day we contoured along the Tonto to the canyon headed by Jupiter Temple.  Here we found these remains of a bighorn sheep.
In 1984 with my Dad, I hiked down the Bill Hall Trail to Thunder River to retrieve some caches I had placed at Deer Creek and Fishtail Rapids.  On our third day we moved our camp to Surprise Valley while I went on and retrieved my caches.  [No photos.]

2002 - From inside Redwall Cavern.

2003 - Moving camp to Hack Canyon.

2008 - River route, Unkar to Basalt.

In 1996 I started a hike down the Nankoweap Trail with John Eastwood and Brian Maris.  On the road to the trailhead in the Saddle Mountain Wilderness we passed a small herd of buffalo.
In 1998 I did a hike to Clear Creek to see a nicely-flowing Cheyava Falls.  On the first day, I was accompanied by John Eastwood on the hike down to Phantom Ranch where we saw many cactus in bloom.
In 2002 Cara Lynn and I took a river trip (our first and only, so far).  The second day we stopped at river mile 33 for a visit to Redwall Cavern, where I took this picture looking back out to the river.
In 2003 Cara Lynn and I were camped for a couple of nights out on the road to Jumpup Point.  This day we moved our camp to the other side of Kanab Canyon to a great overlook of Hack Canyon.
In 2008 Chris Forsyth and I hiked down the Tanner Trail to the river.  On our fourth day we followed along the river from Unkar to Basalt, which included this narrow ledge at one spot.
In 1984 with my Dad, I hiked down the Bill Hall Trail to Thunder River to retrieve some caches I had placed at Deer Creek and Fishtail Rapids.  On our fourth day we moved our camp from Surprise Valley up to the Esplanade near to where we would take the trail to the rim.  [No photos.]

2002 - Playing in the LC

2003 - Looking into Hack Canyon

2008 - Desert View Watchtower

2012 - On the trail in Nankoweap

In 1996 I did a hike down the Nankoweap Trail with John Eastwood and Brian Maris, although Brian turned back at a narrow spot in the Supai.  On our second day, John and I tracked down the petroglyph rock that Steck mentions in his book.
In 1998 I did a hike to Clear Creek.  On the second day I reached my main objective - a close up view of a nicely-flowing Cheyava Falls.
In 2002 Cara Lynn and I took a river trip (our first and only, so far).  The third day we stopped at the Little Colorado River to play around in the aqua-blue water.  Here Cara Lynn is headed up the creek with her pfd, which we used to buoy ourselves in the flow.
In 2003 Cara Lynn and I were camped for a couple of nights out on the road above Hack Canyon.  This day we did a little rim hiking and had this awesome view into Hack.
In 2008 Chris Forsyth and I hiked down the Tanner Trail, crossed the river and did a loop from Basalt to Unkar before returning.  This was our last day and the hike out was picture perfect, especially for the Desert View Watchtower.
In 2012 John Eastwood and I hiked down the Nankoweap, partially accompanied by Bridget Bero and her friend Alexis.  Here John is on the trail atop the Tapeats with Nankoweap Mesa in the background.
In 1984 with my Dad, I hiked down the Bill Hall Trail to Thunder River to retrieve some caches I had placed at Deer Creek and Fishtail Rapids.  This was our last day as we hiked out from our camp on the Esplanade.  [No photos.]

1998 - Angels Gate

2002 - At Deer Creek Falls

2003 - The route down Hack Canyon

2004 - Eric at Hance Rapids

2012 - Mt. Hayden & Sacred Datura

In 1996 I did a hike down the Nankoweap Trail with John Eastwood and Brian Maris, although Brian turned back at a narrow spot in the Supai.  On our third day, I hiked up to Mystic Falls and then climbed up to the source cave, where I took this photo.
In 1998 I did a hike to Clear Creek.  I took this early morning shot of Angels Gate as I was hiking out of Clear Creek, on my way to the South Rim.
In 2002 Cara Lynn and I took a river trip (our first and only, so far).  On the fourth day we stopped at Deer Creek Falls, with a whole bunch of other boaters.  From here we hiked up above the falls to the area of the creek referred to as "the patio."
In 2003 Cara Lynn and I were camped for a couple of nights out on the road above Hack Canyon.  This day we did a hike down the bed of Hack to Kanab Creek, where no water was flowing and it was blisteringly hot.
In 2004 Erik Drake and I did a day hike down the New Hance Trail.  Here is Eric just before we reached the river.
In 2012 John Eastwood and I hiked down the Nankoweap.  On this day we did a little hike up the Marion arm and I got this shot of some Sacred Datura with Mt. Hayden in the background.  The heat soon drove us back to the creek where we spent the rest of the day.

1995 - Pick axe at Fishtail Spring.

1996 - Pink outcrop on Nankoweap.

1997 - Last spring in Nankoweap.

2012 - John on the Nankoweap Trail.

In 1995 Neil Jacobs and I did a hike down the Indian Hollow Trail and did some day hikes from our camp at the spring in Fishtail Canyon.  On the route down to this spring we found this old pick axe.
In 1996 I did a hike down the Nankoweap Trail with John Eastwood and Brian Maris, although Brian turned back at a narrow spot in the Supai.  On our last day, I got this shot of the "pink outcrop" with Marion Point dominating the background.  When Harvey Butchart first hiked this trail he descended to the creekbed at this outcrop, the trail being too faint from many years of disuse.
In 1997 I did a hike down Nankoweap and out via the Kibbey Butte route.  I carried a very light pack and camped in Nankoweap at the last sure water before the assent, this spring.  See my trip blog here.
In 2002 Cara Lynn and I took a river trip (our first and only, so far).  On the fifth day we stopped and hiked up Havasu Creek a bit and then, later in the day, ran the fearsome Lava Falls.  We watched the first boat run the rapids before we followed suit.
In 2003 Cara Lynn and I were camped for a couple of nights out on the road above Hack Canyon.  This day we did a drive and short walk around Toroweap Point.
In 2007 I day hiked down the Bright Angel to visit these cairns to the west of Plateau Point.  Along the way, knowing that I would pass Bill Ferris heading out, I brought along an icy cold soda for him.  See my trip blog here.
In 2008 Cara Lynn and I hiked down the Tanner Trail to retrieve the inflatable kayak that Chris and I had used the previous week to visit Basalt and Unkar.  We got this nice sunset shot near the river by our camp.
In 2012 John Eastwood and I hiked down the Nankoweap.  On this last day hiking up I got this classic shot of John on this narrow spot of the trail in the Supai.

In 1997 I did a hike down Nankoweap and out via the Kibbey Butte route.  The route to the rim goes to the right of this Coconino tower, as viewed from the Kibbey Butte saddle.  See my trip blog here.
In 2000 I did a hike down Grandview with John Eastwood to follow the route down into Grapevine and along the Redwall to Cottonwood.  Along the way we visited the largely-intact remains of an old miners' camp.  See my trip blog here.
In 2002 Cara Lynn and I took a river trip (our first and only, so far).  On our last day we exited with a flight back to Page, AZ from the Bar 10 Ranch.
In 2003 Cara Lynn and I were camped for a couple of nights out on the road above Hack Canyon.  This was the end of our eight day camping trip as we packed up to head home.
In 2008 Cara Lynn and I hiked down the Tanner Trail to retrieve the inflatable kayak that Chris and I had used the previous week to visit Basalt and Unkar.  Hauling up the loaded pack, and some extras, was a chore!
In 2013 I hiked down the Grandview to see the O'Neill Spring area (dry) and loop around the western prong of Horseshoe Mesa and take in the blooming cactus.  Also in bloom were the cliffrose along the upper parts of the trail.

1995 - Neil on the Esplanade.

2012 - Smiling on the South Kaibab Trail.

In 1995 Neil Jacobs and I did a hike down the Indian Hollow Trail and did some day hikes from our camp at the spring in Fishtail Canyon.  On this day we explored and hiked around on the Esplanade.
In 2012 I took one of my colleagues, Bing Zhao, her in-laws and her daughter, Danna, on a short hike down the South Kaibab Trail to Cedar Ridge.  Danna's smile as we are about to be passed by a mule train is another classic Grand Canyon moment.
In 2000 I did a hike down Grandview with John Eastwood to follow the route down into Grapevine and along the Redwall to Cottonwood.  It was supposed to be a day hike (on the 18th) but we didn't see the rim until about 5 a.m. on the 19th, and so no pictures from the early morning!  See my trip blog here.

1995 - Neil shakes out the tent.

In 1995 Neil Jacobs and I did a hike down the Indian Hollow Trail and did some day hikes from our camp at the spring in Fishtail Canyon.  This was our last day, so Neil checked to make sure we didn't leave anything in the tent. :-)

1995 - Pictograph along Big Saddle.

1998 - John at Pasture Wash RS.

2001 - Dean at Cranberry Spring.

In 1995, following our trip to Fishtail Canyon Neil Jacobs and I camped on the rim for a couple of nights to get a chance to explore some old routes.  This day I was able to follow the old trail at Big Saddle down into the upper end of Crazy Jug, although it was quite overgrown and difficult to always stay on the trail.  Along the way I passed this pictograph on a wall in the Kaibab.
In 1998 I drove up to the Pasture Wash and hiked out to the rim to meet up with John Eastwood on his hike out from Pt. Huitzil.  This is John at the abandoned ranger station.
In 2001 I started a five day looping hike down the Bill Hall Trail and into Cranberry Canyon with John Eastwood, Dick Discenza, and his sons Ryan and Dean.  This is Dean at our first camp at the little seep spring in Cranberry where we spent all night filling up water bottles.

1995 - Horseshoe on the Esplanade.

2001 - John entertains at petro rock.

2005 - Flooding near South Canyon.

In 1995, following our trip to Fishtail Canyon Neil Jacobs and I camped on the rim for a couple of nights to get a chance to explore some old routes.  This day I was able to follow an old route to the Esplanade between Crazy Jug and Monument Pt. that I call "the Dutton Route."  On the Esplanade I found this horseshoe.
In 2001 I started a five day looping hike down the Bill Hall Trail and into Cranberry Canyon with John Eastwood, Dick Discenza, and his sons Ryan and Dean.  On our way to the Cranberry Redwall descent we passed this rock that had some faint petroglyphs on it so John decided to channel Kokopelli.
In 2005 I drove up to the Marble Platform with Cara Lynn.  We day hiked part of South Canyon that runs towards the rim (rather than towards the river).  While it was a crystal clear day, low spots on the road were flooded and required care in crossing.

1981 - Trail sign along North Kaibab.

1995 - At Timp Spring.

2001 - The patio area of Deer Creek.

In 1981 I did my first rim-to-rim-to-rim day hike.  I started at midnight at the So. Kaibab and reached the North Rim Lodge at about noon where I fell asleep for an hour in the Sun Room.  I made good time coming back as far as Phantom and then I was running on empty the rest of the way, topping out of the Bright Angel at about 5 a.m. the next morning.  Back then, these metal signs dotted the trail to inform hikers of the relevant geology.
In 1995, following our trip to Fishtail Canyon Neil Jacobs and I camped on the rim for a couple of nights to get a chance to explore some old routes.  This day we packed up our camp overlooking Crazy Jug Canyon and stopped to check out this spring on our way home.
In 2001 I did a five day looping hike down the Bill Hall Trail and into Cranberry Canyon with John Eastwood, Dick Discenza, and his sons Ryan and Dean.  On our third day we lounged around Deer Creek, happy to have a day of rest.  I spent most of my day here in the patio area.

May 24

2009 - Cara Lynn at Shaman's Gallery.

In 2001 I did a five day looping hike down the Bill Hall Trail and into Cranberry Canyon with John Eastwood, Dick Discenza, and his sons Ryan and Dean.  We split up on the fourth day with John and I hiking along the river from Deer Creek to Tapeats and then up that canyon and eventually camp on the Esplanade.  Along the river route we came across this critter - a Grand Canyon Rattlesnake.
In 2009, Cara Lynn and I did a day hike out in Tuckup Canyon to the magnificent Shaman's Gallery pictographic panel.  I wrote a trip blog here.

In 2004, I took a colleague, Scott Roberts, on a day hike down to Phantom Ranch.  He was soon to leave Arizona and had never been down one of the Grand Canyon trails.  It was so hot that afternoon I doubt he'd want to do it again!

May 26

2003 - Erik at sunrise on the Esplanade.

2007 - Cara Lynn on the Big Saddle Trail.

In 2003, Cara Lynn, Erik and I did an overnight hike down to Thunder River.  We camped on the Esplanade overnight on our way back out.  Here, Erik is exploring around before breakfast.
In 2007, Cara Lynn and I spent a couple of nights out at Big Saddle, near to Crazy Jug.  Here is Cara Lynn by the old cement trough on the Big Saddle Trail.

1987 - With Paul E. on Bill Hall Trail.

2002 - The narrows of Paria Canyon.

2000 - Rocket stays cool at Sowats.

2005 - Snow in DeMotte Park.

In 1980, I did my first hike down the New Hance Trail.  Back then there were still many wild burros roaming the canyon including this family group down close to the creekbed.
In 1987, I did a hike with Paul Eichenberger down the Bill Hall Trail to Deer Creek.  On our first day heat exhaustion led me to spend the night at the edge of Surprise Valley overlooking Deer Creek.
In 2000, I spent a few days with (most of) the Eastwood family - Megan, John & Kathy - at the Big Saddle camp.  This day we did a bike ride to Sowats Point, although Rocket is chillin' under the truck.

In 2000, I spent a few days with (most of) the Eastwood family - Megan, John & Kathy - at the Big Saddle camp.  This day we drove over to the Indian Hollow trailhead and did a bit of hiking around, including with my dog Peppyr.
In 2002, Cara Lynn and I joined the Dicenzas - Dick, Dean & Ryan - on a hike down the Paria.  All of day two seemed to be a slog down the creek and here is Cara Lynn doing the slogging!
In 2009, Cara Lynn and drove up to the South Rim to get a number for the June 1st permit request.  We made a day of it by driving out west and hiking to the rim; we hoped to hit Jicarilla Pt. but came out closer to Piute Pt. with a bit of rain in the early afternoon.
